  • Q. What inspired you to become a Mortgage Broker?

    A. I was a former Banking Specialist at Westpac. My main role was to assess customers for home lending. At times, the applications would not progress because they  did not meet the Bank’s lending criteria. I would feel bad that I was not able to help them with their goal of becoming a homeowner just because one or a couple of factors  in their personal or financial situation were not satisfactory to the Bank. The recommendation would then be either to work on those areas and try applying again or go to a broker. As a mortgage broker, I would be in a better position to help them. The role would mean accreditation to a number of banks and other lenders whose lending criteria could be the match for my customers’ personal and financial profile. I would be able to negotiate on their behalf and  get them the best deal in the market.

    Q. What is the best part of being a Mortgage Broker?

    A. As a mortgage broker, I would be able to make each customer’s service experience a pleasant one. This is because I will no longer be restricted to the norms of the Bank. I can spend more time with my customers to be able to understand their personal and financial circumstances so that my recommendations and solutions would meet their needs and goals.  I would be able to look at the whole lending market to find the best product/s for my customers. And more importantly, I would be able to build a good relationship based on mutual trust knowing that their interest would be my utmost priority.

    Q. What have you found to be the most challenging aspect?

    A. When the lending application requires mitigations or some work. I like the challenge of it because I know that I would gain learnings from it. It will make me hone my skills, thereby providing better service to my customers.

    Q. What is your most memorable client experience?

    A. It was when I helped a couple who was initially declined with their home top up application to do some home improvements for their growing family. We consolidated their short-term lendings, re-structured the mortgage, set-up accounts to make sure they would no longer miss on repayments and bills, and worked on a budget to help them manage their income and expenses. By supporting the application with some mitigations, we were able to get an approval. They were able to  save on interest and fees, and the quality of their life became better. This  service experience resulted in a long-term relationship. When I transferred to another branch in another town, I was so delighted to see them. It gave me the opportunity to help them with their new needs. When asked, they cheerfully said, “We knew that you would move mountains for us”.

    Q. How would you sum up being a Mortgage Broker in three words?

    A. Exceptional Customer Service

    Q. If you were Prime Minister for one day, what would you do?

    A. I would advocate and support fiscal and monetary policies that would help New Zealanders closer to  achieving their financial needs and goals. Offer the Kainga Ora’s First Home Partner product again to help customers get into homeownership sooner and at a good rate.

    Q. If you could have dinner with any three people (alive or dead), who would it be?

    A. PM Christopher Luxon

    President Joe Biden

    President Vladimir Putin

    Q. Complete this sentence: If I Wasn’t in Mortgage Broking, I would be…

    A. A Christian missionary.
